Public evening lecture by Professor Dr. Christian Scholl (University of Hildesheim, Institute of Fine Arts and Art Studies)

as part of the lecture series "Talking about Friedrich" in the Caspar David Friedrich anniversary year 2024

The "Centennial Exhibition of German Art" held at Berlin's National Gallery in 1906 marked a turning point in the assessment of Caspar David Friedrich. Although his landscape painting had by no means been completely forgotten in the previous decades, it was regarded as an art-historical aberration. Now, however, it seemed to offer an alternative to the now critically viewed "official" art of the 19th century - and a level that at least seemed to come close to the admired French painting of the time.
The lecture deals with the foundations and motifs of this re-evaluation around 1900. Under the auspices of modernism, a new fascination for the formal-aesthetic qualities of Friedrich's paintings developed at that time, which is expressed, for example, in Julius Maier-Graefe's catalog texts for the Century Exhibition with their remarkable color descriptions. In the decades that followed, new aspects of Friedrich's work were repeatedly brought into focus. A multi-layered, eventful and often controversial reception history began. If Friedrich is now regarded as the most famous German painter in older art history, the foundations for this still ultimately lie in the "exhibition of the century".

Christian Scholl is a lecturer at the Institute of Fine Arts and Art History at the University of Hildesheim. He has conducted research on Romanticism and the reception of Romanticism in Munich, Chicago and Göttingen, among other places. In addition to numerous essays, he wrote his habilitation thesis on these topics, Romantische Malerei als neue Sinnbildkunst. Studien zur Bedeutungsgebung bei Philipp Otto Runge, Caspar David Friedrich und den Nazarenern (Munich, Berlin 2005) and the volume Revisionen der Romantik. On the Reception of 'New German Painting' 1817-1906 (Berlin 2012). His book Caspar David Friedrich und seine Zeit was published in 2015.
