Lecture & Science

Public evening lecture by Professor Dr. Ulrich Schreiber (Duisburg-Essen)

as part of the lecture series "Discovering origins: A journey from the beginnings of the earth to the emergence of humankind"

Knowledge of the place of origin is one of the most important prerequisites for research into the origins of life. While the conditions on the surface of the young Earth more than 4 billion years ago were unfavorable due to UV radiation, solar wind, erosion and flooding after meteorite impacts, the first continental crustal areas offered a long-lasting protected space in which all raw materials and optimal physicochemical boundary conditions were available. Pressure fluctuations of gas-driven cold-water geysers led to cyclic reaction processes that resulted in the formation of vesicles, peptides and an RNA.

Ulrich Schreiber received his diploma in geology at the TU Clausthal in 1981 with a geochemical thesis on marine manganese ores. This was followed in 1987 by a doctorate on volcanites from the Argentinian Puna. In the same year, he took up an assistant position at the Geological Institute of the University of Bonn, where he habilitated in 1994 on the volcanites of the Westerwald. In 1996 he was appointed to the Chair of General Geology at the GH-Essen, now the University of Duisburg-Essen. In addition to volcanism and tectonics, his research focuses on the origin of life in the continental crust.

Moderation: Professor Dr. Martin Meschede
