Theatre & Stage, Literature

by Tove Ditlevsen - German-language premiere, stage version by Alice Buddeberg and Philip Klose, German by Ursel Allenstein

"Don't you know that all people come in different editions, just like books?"

Lise Mundus is a writer and mother of three in Denmark in the 1960s. Her writing has helped her achieve prestige and an upscale lifestyle, but for some time now she has lacked the inspiration for a new book. There is little interest in her repeatedly unfaithful husband Gert and the maid Gitte has closer contact with her children than she does herself. Her everyday life slips away from Lise more and more. She believes she hears voices and the faces of loved ones increasingly appear to her as frightening grimaces. An overdose of pills finally lands her in a psychiatric ward. But is madness really something she should be afraid of or does it perhaps offer the refuge she longs for so much?

Tove Ditlevsen is a master of autofictional literature. Her major biographical work, the Copenhagen Trilogy, was not published in a complete German translation until 2021 and caused a sensation in Germany as a literary discovery. Faces also contains numerous references to the life and thoughts of the author herself. In the field of tension between dependence and autonomy, she is a keen observer of the human psyche. Alice Buddeberg is bringing Gesichter to the German stage for the first time.
