Fifth exhibition accompanying the presentation of the nail relief "Weißer Schrei" by Günther Uecker in the State Library, free admission
"Contradictions united in man are an expression of his poetry". This is how Günther Uecker describes his everyday design for a silk foulard, which will be part of an exhibition at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Library from February 26. It reflects his artistic work in two directions: as the creator of the scarf, produced in 100 numbered copies, and as the art-loving wearer of this special textile. The foulard "Verletzung" (1988) combines Uecker's axe-cut woodcut with the most delicate material, the silk scarf, edited in the Patrick Stoffel Collection St. Gallen.
Günther Uecker also brought his art into everyday life in other areas of serial design. At Hutschenreuther, he combined nails and thorns with porcelain in the form of the pain plate "Pein" (2007). As early as 1982/83, he created the "Lettera" standing desk for Rosenthal. This timeless piece of furniture is still in production today. The artist added a graphic lettering to the first examples, which expresses the purpose of his design. Framed in the style of the desk, the two merge into a single unit.
"Lettera" is one of Uecker's bibliophile works and gave the State Library the impetus for the exhibition of everyday designs by its namesake Günther Uecker. In addition to the aforementioned, the "Rosenthal Relief Series" and the design for an inner-city square (1996) will be presented. Also on display are envelopes that stand for the rich book production and theUecker clock "Interferences". The latter was created in 1997 as a benefit for the street magazine "fiftyfifty". The combination of these different objects provides a new, almost surprising view of the Mecklenburg-born artist, who only last year presented Schwerin Cathedral with the first of four stained glass windows planned for the transept.
Most of the exhibits in the State Library come from private collections. They accompany the presentation of the nail relief "White Scream", on loan from the Schwerin State Museum. The exhibition "Everyday Designs. Design by Günther Uecker" runs from 26.02. to 26.04.2024. A visit is possible during opening hours. Admission is free.
