Of cogs, barques and steel ships - a multimedia journey through maritime history at the Rostock Maritime Museum.
The permanent exhibition "REEDER, RUDER, SEEMANNSGARN - From Rostock to the world." on board the Rostock Maritime Museum has been open to visitors since June 2023: an impressive multimedia exhibition on the shipbuilding and shipping history of Rostock and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Visitors to the museum can expect an exciting journey through the maritime history of the Hanseatic era and the 19th and 20th centuries, accompanied by stories about Rostock sailors and shipbuilders. The exhibition focuses on the development of shipbuilding with a focus on clients, constructions and shipyards and also examines the causes of the rise and fall of the maritime industry. Visitors to the museum learn interesting facts about the first shipping routes, navigation, regional trade goods and ship's crews.
The multimedia journey through regional shipbuilding is accompanied by the latest technologies, which set new standards in the museum landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Thanks to augmented reality, the museum visitor becomes a figurehead or interactive media and hands-on stations offer an incomparable exhibition experience that impressively presents the combination of traditional museum work with innovative media technologies. The newly launched museum app "Schifffahrtsmuseum Rostock" playfully guides young and old through the entire exhibition and combines digital information directly with the analog exhibition experience.
The exhibition covers the entire deck 4 of the traditional ship DRESDEN, which moored in 1970 on the banks of the Warnow in what is now IGA Park Rostock and has been open to visitors ever since. As the largest exhibit, the ship itself, with its original rooms, is an impressive contemporary witness and an integral part of the cultural offerings of the Hanseatic and University City of Rostock.
