"70 years of the Luxembourg Agreement between Germany, Israel and the Jewish Claims Conference - an attempt to "make amends" for National Socialist injustice"

As part of the opening of the exhibition, Jens Hoppe, historian at the Claims Conference, will moderate a panel discussion with survivors of the Shoah from the region and the anti-Semitism commissioner for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Nikolaus Voss.

Seven years after the end of the Holocaust, the Federal Republic of Germany, the State of Israel and the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany sat down together and negotiated the impossible. After a tough struggle, these three parties, who had not existed before the war, concluded an agreement in Luxembourg in September 1952 that was a historic milestone. It was the beginning of facing up to the challenge of meeting the needs of the survivors and alleviating them. How were the three parties able to achieve this? How have things developed since then?

The exhibition shows the history of Jewish material claims after the Shoah and the German efforts to take responsibility for the crimes of National Socialism on nine large exhibition cubes illuminated from the inside. Images, texts and graphics illustrate how this important task has developed over the last 70 years, what changes and improvements have been made and what is planned for the future. Those affected, the survivors of the Holocaust, are always the focus of the exhibition. Above all, the diverse aspects and perspectives of these efforts to achieve the same goal, which have been negotiated and agreed upon again and again over the decades, stand out. The exhibition makes it clear that although the crimes of the National Socialists cannot be "made good", the efforts for the benefit of the victims must not end.
