Rostock Old Town city tour: a journey through eight centuries in Rostock's oldest district
In GDR times, Rostock's old town was divided between new magnificent buildings and constant decay. But even in earlier centuries, there was a clear division - between rich and poor merchants, patricians and craftsmen, university members and Wends.
On the tour through the central, new and eastern parts of the old town, you can look upwards to impressive church buildings, downwards to works of art that are almost unrecognizable as such, straight ahead to interesting restaurants and stores and always left and right to special facades to hear their eventful history.
It only takes a few steps to stroll from the hustle and bustle of the main shopping street into tranquil alleyways. Always accompanied by the great churches of the Hanseatic era (still standing and lost), you embark on a journey through 800 years of city history. For refreshment, there are local and international dishes, sweet and savory, experiments and culinary classics.
A selection of exciting culinary stops awaits you on your tour, for example:
- a wine store that has more to offer
- a Greek taverna
- a Mecklenburg restaurant
- a cozy café with a view of the church
- a sugar-sweet cupcake shop
