No fun without a connection Is public transportation a privilege of the city?
What is the key to a successful mobility transition? Millions of people travel by bus and train every day and rely on a well-connected public transport system. But what if switching to public transport is not an option?
In rural regions in particular, it is difficult to imagine doing without your own car. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the predominantly rural federal state, covers more than 90% of the state's area and is home to more than half of the population. In these regions, the lack of infrastructure poses a major challenge. Mobility here means, above all, driving. The dream of climate-friendly and sustainable mobility still seems unattainable in large parts of the country.
At the same time, public transport is becoming increasingly unattractive due to infrequent services, limited operating times and inadequate territorial coverage. However, sustainable mobility is becoming increasingly important, especially in times of climate change and political efforts to achieve the climate targets of Germany and the European Union. Rural areas play a key role in this: the mobility-related CO2 footprint here is almost a quarter higher than in urban areas.
So what can sustainable mobility in rural areas look like?
