Even though this is a feature film, it corresponds with the documentary "Kalle Kosmonaut" about East Berlin that screened on March 28.
15-year-old Lukas already suspects that it will be a bad day when the security guards at the entrance to his hotspot school refuse to let him into the classroom without his school ID. It's a small thing that sets off a fatal chain of events. "Screw it," he tells himself, and arranges to play hooky with Gino and Julius. And then it's not long before the boys are badly beaten up between fronts by Arabs and Turks dealing drugs in the park.
In a social hotspot with a high proportion of foreigners and few prospects for the future, testosterone and machismo, poverty, pent-up anger and injustice suffered combine to form a highly inflammable cocktail. One sentence, one remark, one gesture is enough to trigger the explosion. With great empathy and precision, Wnendt took a close look at the milieu of the young people, carefully researched and involved those affected in the preparation and shooting of the film. For this film, he teamed up with Felix Lobrecht, who distilled the novel of the same name from his own experiences in Gropiusstadt. The year 2003 is not meant historically here, the film has its finger on the pulse of time!
