England in the mid-1980s. Conservative politics had imposed a radical cure on the state and the economy - with drastic social consequences. In the north of the country, miners take to the barricades.
Jackie Elliot and his eldest son Tony are also among the strikers who rebel in anger and despair against the closure of the mines. Tough on himself, the father - after the death of his wife - is also tough on his children: eleven-year-old Billy is sent to boxing training so that he learns to fight back with his fists - just like a real man. But contrary to expectations, Billy develops little enjoyment of martial arts. He feels all the more drawn to the goings-on in the other half of the sports hall, where girls are practising their ballet steps. Full of longing and fascinated by dancing, Billy finds the courage to take off his boxing gloves and put on his ballet shoes. Of course, he is not allowed to reveal his new passion at home. When his father finds out about his son's 'unmanly' activities, his ballet ambitions seem to be over once and for all. But neither the ambitious Billy nor his resolute teacher will back down: Now they are secretly training for a big goal: auditioning for the Royal Ballet School in London.
