Theatre & Stage

Freely adapted from the musical "West Side Story" / Music School of the Rostock District / Tanzeleven Teterow.

The musical "West Side Story" premiered in 1957 with music by Leonard Bernstein is still a hit with audiences today: The two youth gangs "Sharks" and "Jets" rival each other in New York on Manhattan's West Side. However, this enmity cannot stop Tony, a member of the "Jets", from falling in love with the Puerto Rican Maria, the sister of the Shark leader Bernardo. They meet at a dance and it is love at first sight.

Secretly the two meet and although Tony promises Maria to reach out to the "Sharks" and prevent the upcoming street fights, Maria's brother Bernardo is stabbed to death by Tony. This is the beginning of a love story laced with revenge and tragedy.

Loosely based on the musical "West Side Story", the dancers from Teterow interpret the modern Romeo and Juliet story according to a musical collage of pieces by Bernstein and modern music.

Tickets are available at the Güstrow information desk.
