Our 6th Zoolauf will take place on 19.09.2024.
This year, the focus is on South American river dolphins. In cooperation with the Zoological Society for Species and Population Conservation (ZGAP), we are supporting a project to protect river dolphins in Brazil.
River dolphins are among the rarest, most endangered and least known of all cetaceans. Two of the world's six river dolphin species live in the Amazon region: the Amazon river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis) and the tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis). Both the Amazonian dolphin and the tucuxi are classified as critically endangered according to the IUCN Red List. Currently, these species are endangered due to numerous threats, such as river pollution, siltation of lakes and canals, port construction and entanglement in fishing nets.
The aim is to determine the population size of the cetaceans in Lake Tefé in the Amazon and to investigate the influence of environmental variables such as water level and water temperature on the population of the Amazon dolphin and the tucuxi. These results will then be used to develop concrete measures to protect these special animals.
The run takes place as a 4-person relay and covers a distance of just under 3 km (each runner) through the zoo. The baton is handed over at the start and finish area in the zoo parking lot, naturally to the thunderous applause of the team members and supporters. The run is aimed at companies and clubs. All information and the relay registration can be found here: https://www.zoo-schwerin.de/unterstuetzen/zoolauf.
We look forward to seeing you!
Reminder: Our training run will take place on 29.08.2024 at 5 pm. We will meet in front of the zoo store.
