The romantic experience of a great continent with its grandiose nature left lasting impressions on Frederick Delius and Antonín Dvořák, which are reflected in their compositions.
Delius, who was in danger of being suffocated by the intellectual narrowness of the merchant dynasty of which he was the heir, sought his salvation for a time by fleeing to America, where from 1884 he managed an orange plantation in Florida more poorly than well. However, the fruits of his inspiration ripened there, which were reflected in the "Florida Suite" in 1887, at a time when Delius was already back in Europe and deepening his musical studies in Leipzig. Antonín Dvořák was already a respected composer in Europe when he began his travels to America. Inspired not only by the big cities and the overwhelming nature, but also by American folklore, he wrote his symphony "From the New World", a work that can be understood as a continental bridge. It is equally characterized by longing thoughts of his Czech homeland and impressions of the new America he had yet to discover.
