Conductor: Marcus Bosch
Violoncello: Jan VoglerKonstantia Gourzi: Furioso Variations 21 op. 80
Antonín Dvořák: Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in B minor op. 104
Richard Strauss: Don Juan tone poem (after Nikolaus Lenau) op. 20
Richard Strauss: Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche nach alter Schelmenweise - in Rondoform - op. 28Antonín Dvořák's cello concerto promises a brilliant end to the Philharmoniker's season, especially when the world-class cellist Jan Vogler, who is also the artistic director of the Dresden Music Festival and founder of the Moritzburg Festival, takes on the solo part. The concert, led by chief conductor Marcus Bosch, begins with the Athens-born composer and conductor Konstantia Gourzi's Variations 21, known as Furioso.
Symphonic poems by the young Richard Strauss determine the second part of the program: at the age of just 24, he dedicated himself to the character of the famous womanizer Don Juan. The sound was wonderful, with a huge glow and opulence, wrote Strauss enthusiastically after the first rehearsal. In 1895, six years after the successful premiere of Don Juan, he created Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks. He had discarded his original plan to create an opera about the legendary joker and instead composed his tone poem after five Eulenspiegel pranks - in the old roguish manner.
