Tour 3: Castles, lakes and national parks in the Mecklenburg lake district

Discover the Mecklenburg lake district, also called land of a 1000 lakes.

Route: Klink – Mecklenburg Switzerland: tour of castles – Waren: guided tour of town, Müritzeum – Müritz National Park – Retzow Castle – Ludorf

The Mecklenburg lake district is also called land of a 1000 lakes. A number of lakes are connected to rivers resulting in the lake district becoming paradise for water sports enthusiasts with its vast network of waterways.

In Waren, the largest town in the lake district, after a short tour of the town you visit the Müritzeum, which presents the flora and fauna of the Müritz National Park in its interactive exhibition.

However, the lake district and neighbouring Mecklenburg Switzerland are not just home to numerous lakes and impressive nature but also the majority of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s roughly 2,000 castles and mansions.

And so you set off in the footsteps of lords of the manor and dukes and are going to visit several castles and mansions, which are used as both hotels and locations for concerts and cultural events today and have been restored with great attention to detail. Both the different architectural styles and vast manicured landscaped gardens that surround the magnificent buildings are very impressive.
