German amber museum

The museum presents Europe's largest amber exhibition with outstanding historical and modern exhibits.

You can expect an exciting introduction to the natural history and geology of the fossil resin and valuable artworks from 3000 years on more than 1,000 sqm. The exhibition on the history of monasteries and abbeys in the adjacent monastery church shows hidden and revealed treasures, so that you can trace the life of the Clarissites and the evangelical landowners' daughters in this place.

Where in mediaval times devout Clarissins prayed, today there shine the treasures of the German Amber Museum. The visitor is familiarized with the natural, art and cultural history of amber.
The themes of the permanent exhibition include: Amber finds on the coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the history of the search for amber and the craftsmanship of amber in the Middle Ages, the large-scale extraction of amber in the 19th century and modern artistic processing in the present day. In the museum workshop you have the possibility to try the amber cutting yourself.

Tip for families: For children there are great opportunities to get involved with the "gold of the coast".
