Mecklenburg-Schwerin

Nature-lover or cultural enthusiast, Lake Schaal or Schwerin Palace, you will be won over by the region's charms.

The region is a paradise for nature-lovers. You can explore the unpretentious beauty of the place on foot or by bicycle along the well-signposted trails. And yet another network attracts visitors to West Mecklenburg: the waterways. Water sports enthusiasts can paddle and sail along the rivers and lakes through the unspoiled state, a particularly tranquil way in which to enjoy the area. There is an especially diverse and varied amount of flora and fauna to be found in the biosphere reserve of "Lake Schaal" and the "Elbetal" nature park. Beavers and otters are at home here and eagles may also be spotted circling the skies.

Ludwigslust and Schwerin, the two former ducal residences, occupy a very special position here. A touch of nobility still pervades the air in the two cities. The state capital of Schwerin has also evolved into a much-vaunted shopping paradise, an excellent reason in itself to stroll through the lovingly restored streets. But even the smaller towns and villages offer a rich abundance of culture and history.
